Development of Older Adults' Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to develop a self-directed learning(SDL) readiness scale for Korean older adults. Previous literature review and interview of practitioners, scholars, and older adult learners were conducted and 60 items of preliminary scale were developed. For exploratory factor analysis, 279 older adults were surveyed and 40 items and four factors were produced. For confirmatory factor analysis, data were collected from 254 older adults and 24 items and three factors of the scale were extracted: characteristic factor(11 items), cognitive factor(7 items), and environmental factor(6 items). Cronbach's Alpha for 24 items was .928 and model fit indices(TLI=.842, CFI=.869, RMSEA HI90=.091, SRMR=.062) showed that the final model was acceptable. An item-level of content validity index(I-CVI) and overall scale-content validity indexes(S-CVI) were computed and one item were deleted. Further studies by using this scale is needed in oder to understand several variables related to older adults' SDL and to find appropriate ways of facilitating SDL for older adults.
